History of the Art Museum of Minsk
The history of the museum began in 1939, whenthe capital of the BSSR opened the State Picture Gallery, where works of art collected from mansions, museums of other cities of the republic and other major museums of the USSR were exhibited. Unfortunately, during the Second World War most of the artwork of the gallery was taken out and looted. After the war, the gallery management re-occupied the collection. Since 1957, the gallery has been renamed the State Art Museum of the BSSR. Later the museum moved several times, it was completed with new buildings. To date, the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus is considered one of the richest in the Eastern European region.

The fund of the famous museum has about 30 thousandworks of art that make up 20 collections. The first is a collection of national (Belarusian) art. The exhibition introduces its visitors to the collection of items of ancient Belarusian art and crafts (icons, crosses, ornaments, objects of everyday life, carvings, jewelry, fabric samples, etc.). Also in the Art Museum in Minsk there is an exposition of the Belarusian art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unfortunately, works of art of the XIX century are few - no more than 500 units, which is explained by the export of the collection during the war. But the collection of painting, decorative and applied art, graphics and sculpture of Belarus of the XX century is quite extensive - about 11 thousand exhibits.
The collection of world art The National Art Museum of Minsk is represented by works of masters from the countries of the East of the XIV-XX centuries, Europe of the XVI-XX centuries and Russia of the XVIII-early XX centuries.
Branches of the Art Museum in Minsk
In addition, the museum owns several branches. It is, first of all, the museum of the artist Byalynitsky-Biruli in Mogilev, where the works of the creator are presented, as well as photographs and documents telling about his biography. In another branch - the Museum of Belarusian Folk Art Raubichah - acquaint visitors with masterpieces of Belarusian rubber (wood carvings), weaving and pottery. No less interesting will be in the House of Wankowicz (Minsk), a restored manor house, where an exposition of sculptures, paintings by Vankovich and other artists is presented.
